My mom is getting a divorce and we are moving into an apartment together.
She makes decent pay, but her car payment is very high(530/mo). She wants to sell it, but she is about five grand upside down on it. She wants a cheaper car that has lower payments so her budget isn't so tight.
But if she sells her car, she'll only get about 15-16000, and her loan was for about 22000. Is there a way to get a grant for this so she can pay off whatever she can't sell?
Serious answers only please :]

Back to the question:
I was just curious if there was one. I've seen some for housing so I thought there might be a personal one for people within certain situations.
Don't bother calling that guy because it's a MYTH that you can get personal grants.
Imagine if that were true -- anyone can simply ask for grants when they need to pay bills, improve their homes, pay their debts, etc -- then there will be NO BANKRUPTCY in America whatsoever. No one would be poor; no one would ask for welfare because when the bills come, they simply ask the government for money
Matthew Lesko -- the guy in question mark -- is just duping you into buying his books and whatnot. He misrepresents what grants are all about and makes the false claim that there is such a thing as personal grants. You may want to read this article from consumeraffairs.com about Lesko's FALSE CLAIMS http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/le?
The government is NOT in the business of giving away free money for the sake of giving away money. There are no grants for paying bills, no grants for paying off credit cards, no grants for getting out of debt and no grants for simply fattening your wallet.
Grants are free, but it means OBLIGATION. You will be obligated to do as the grant sets out to do. Grants have objectives, and your purpose must fit the objective of the grant.
For one, you have to write the grant application and the grant application is not a simple document - you have to explain how your purpose for applying for the grant fits well with the objectives set out by the grant.
There is a stringent review process through a committee. You will compete with other applicants for the grant money, and this grant review committee will evaluate the merits of each proposal. Only those that they feel exemplifies the objective of the grant will be approved.
You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes.
Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.
Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Most of the federal grants are given to specific target groups with specific requirements (e.g. minority business owners involved in transportation related contracts emanating from DOT - Grant#20.905 Disadvantaged Business Enterprises Short Term Lending Program. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.
Grants are also often given to non profit groups or organizations involved in training or other similar activities (grant 59.043 Women's Business Ownership Assistance that are given to those who will create women's business center that will train women entrepreneurs
You will only find scams, because there's no such thing as personal grants

The Government has created a portal to help individuals who need benefits because of life events. Visit http://www.govbenefits.gov
Use the drop down button DO YOU NEED BENEFITS BECAUSE OF A LIFE EVENT? Choose the life situation best applicable to you and then see if you qualify for the available government assistance.

I'm currently in school for business administration and want to attend a different school for cosmetology but I can't find any aid to help with the tuition. The school is in New York but I live in Virginia, I google and found some assistance but it's only residents of New York city. I really want to go to this school and open up my own shop after. Does anyone know where I can get help? Thanks in advance!
First, with some minor exceptions, there are no federal grants for small business start-ups. The exceptions would be things like high tech, green tech, etc. - areas the government has a specific interest in promoting.
For most start-ups, you will need to apply for a business loan with federal assistance coming in the form of an SBA loan guarantee. For this, you will have to develop a formal business plan and present to your local bank's business loan officer - when you do, ask about the SBA guarantee program.
I don't think there are any private grants to help with the moving. You can try to ask this organization that helps homeless people about grants to help you move, but I have never seen one -- whether from a government or private foundation.

If you want private grants or grants from private foundations, the best resource for this is Foundation Center http://www.fdncenter.org . They have a very good database covering all organizations giving grants and you can find foundations that are interested in supporting your type of cause. However, it's a subscription based website ($19.95 per month I think is the cheapest subscription price). But it certainly is worth the fee. You can subscribe one month, and make sure you get all the info you need and then stop the subscription.
Avoid the sites recommended by the first two answerers which promises you that there are grants for anything you can think of, then ask for a payment even though there's none.
Florida has a program called Children First Florida. It's for every grade, I got it for my senior year of private school (2008) There are some other ones too, but that's the one that worked for me, and the only one thats name i know.
I agree with you somewhat about homeless people in this country; a lot of them are lazy, have made bad mistakes and need to move on. However, I find it very offensive to say people in poor countries "just suffer and watch each other die". Those people truly have no chance of making a better life for themselves. Their government will not aid them or give them the aid WE send (yes, Bush helps a lot of countries, he just got back from a trip to Africa). They don't have any way to get out of their poor life, do you expect them to come up with thousands of dollars for a plane ticket? If they try to do something about it, they get thrown in jail or even killed.
I suggest you take this answer and all the others to heart and realize what you're saying. I have been on 4 mission trips to Africa, Venezuela, Haiti and India and I have read a book called Kaffir Boy. In the least, read Kaffir Boy, or look up a summary for it. it might change your feelings.
Luckily for some (like yourself) the ability and opportunity for self-improvement and worldly success was possible. For many others that is simply not the case.
It is not common sense to assume that All the poor and impoverished are capable of "working" their way up to graduate schools and obtaining degrees in law, medicine, business, education, etc etc.
Further, if Everyone thought and did as you, then who would be left to pick the crops in the sun drenched fields so you and many others can conveniently go to market and purchase them or who would be left in all the sweat shops around the world to manufacture the countless items you may now purchase with your improved salary.
If any person does so then good for them but it is categorically unfair to judge and hold it against those that cannot.
Corporate capitalistic greed (the american way / dream) is the source from which all global poverty arises. A simple case of the rich getting richer, while the middle class is disappearing and the poor get even poorer, we are the modern equivalent of the Roman Empire.
If our US government can subsidize a war to the tune of an estimated $845 BILLION in the next decade, then that same rotund government can use its existing social programs to easily provide basic food, clothing, shelter and health care for the citizens it professes to secure "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" the very reasons for its formation and existence in the first place.
The "additional child tax credit" and the "earned income credit" are both refundable credits. That means that you can get money back that you've never paid in.
The IRS is fully aware of it, and Congress did it on purpose.
I once gave a 20-year-old girl with twins a $6600 refund no one was expecting. She qualified for both credits and had filled out her W-4 as "single-one" rather than "head of household-3".
I told her to fill out another W-4 and giver herself a $400/month raise.
************************ By the way, if you don't mind a little politics, this is the biggest joke of the new century. While democrats are screeming "tax cuts for the rich", the real tax benefits of this century have been overwhelmingly for the poor and middle class, and they're laughing all the way to the bank.
Bush raised the child tax credit from $400 per child to $1000 per child, and the additional child tax credit is attached to insure you get it all.
There was also the "Military Family Tax Relief Act" of 2003, and active duty people are getting even more. It's a well-kept secret that we enjoy these two refundable credits the most because of the mechanics of serving in a tax-free hazard zone overseas.
Only wealthy people should have health coverage and first priority to health coverage.
I was born into a wealthy family, and therefore my health concerns are more important than the health concerns of some poor Liberal parasite from the inner-cities.
ObamaCare is an abomination that seeks to ensure health care for the poor. We need to repeal ObamaCare because parasites have no place in a hospital.
Poor people are an inconvenience and an eyesore to me.
True, I think, as a snapshot at a given point of time.
But lower prices hurt the businesses that furnish the goods and services, putting them at risk of going out of business or not making a profit. The result of either of these consequences is to put the jobs of their employees at risk and increasing the probability that they will be put out of work or have their wages reduced.
Even if you may not qualify for a personal grant, you can certainly get approved for a no credit check personal loan and receive the money with no credit card required.
Yes. You're living in their houses, so if you get money that you can pay them with, they expect you to. Same thing happened to a friend of mine. They just didn't mention it to the landlords, and nothing happened.
For example if I am living on campus and getting charged $25 a day, will Centrelink give rent assitance through Youth Allowance to help cover this cost, or do I have to live off campus to qualify?
Centrelink assess each persons situation independently and take into consideration your income and your parents income and a whole bunch of other stuff. Speak to students who are living in residence to get an idea , but in the end you will be assessed according to your own situation.
The Housing and Urban Development in their Grants Available page makes it clear that they do not provide grants to individuals -- hence no grants for a person to buy a home http://www.hud.gov/grants/index.cfm
"While HUD does not offer direct grants or loans to individuals, we do work through local governments and non-profit organizations to make financial assistance and counseling available."

If you organize yourself as a non profit organization, you stand a better chance of getting government grant than as a for-profit business
I don't think you have anything to worry about..as long as the house is decent. My guess is that the grant helped to build the home. The government gives out grants to build homes in areas that do not have "affordable houses" in the area. If you have questions, just call the landlord. I'm sure they will be happy to answers all questions.
